Sacrament of Baptism.

The second stage in the development of the sacrament of Baptism. As Christianity spread, whole households were received into the church and Christian parents increasingly sought baptism for their children. By the year 700 AD the majority of baptisms were of infants. As a result the extended period of preparation was no longer undertaken. Baptisms were usually celebrated at Easter time. Traditionally in the early church the Bishop was the minister of the sacrament of Baptism however with the increasing numbers for baptism the local parish priest became the celebrant of the sacrament. At a later date, those who had been baptized would be brought to the Bishop for the “laying on of hands” at which he confirmed the earlier celebration by the priest.

Entrance Hymn.                                       Offertory

Colours of day dawn into the mind                         I am the bread of life. He who

The sun has come up, the night is                         comes to me shall not hunger.

behind.                                                              He who believes in me shall not

Go down in the city, into the street,                     thirst.

And let’s give the message to the                                    No one can come to me Unless

people we meet.                                                  the father beckons.

So light up the fire and let the flame                   Chorus

burn.                                                                 And I will raise him up, and I will

Open the door, let Jesus return                          raise him up, and I will raise

Take seed of His Spirit, let the fruit                   him up on the last day.

grow.

Tell the people of Jesus, let his love show.

                                  Recessional Hymn

Swing low, sweet Chariot,                                     Swing low, sweet Chariot

Coming for to carry me home                                Coming to carry me home,

Swing low, sweet Chariot,                                     Swing low, sweet Chariot,

Coming for to carry me home.                               Coming for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan, and what did                       The brightest day that I can say,

I see?  Coming for to carry me home,                    Coming for to carry me home,

A band of angels coming after me,                                    When Jesus washed my sins away,

Coming for to carry me home                                Coming for to carry me home.
