Sacrament
of Baptism.
The second stage in the development of the sacrament
of Baptism. As
Christianity spread, whole households were received into the church and
Christian parents increasingly sought baptism for their children. By the year
700 AD the majority of baptisms were of infants. As a result the extended
period of preparation was no longer undertaken. Baptisms were usually
celebrated at Easter time. Traditionally in the early church the Bishop was the
minister of the sacrament of Baptism however with the increasing numbers for baptism
the local parish priest became the celebrant of the sacrament. At a later date,
those who had been baptized would be brought to the Bishop for the “laying on
of hands” at which he confirmed the earlier celebration by the priest.
