Baptism:
Baptism
as a sacrament developed over the generations. The first stage is during the
early life of the Christian community. John the Baptist offered baptism as a
sign of repentance and change. John’s
baptism of Jesus confirmed that Jesus was in fact God made man; that he was
truly human in our world. At his own ascension, Jesus told his apostles, make
disciples of all the nations, baptize them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit. This is the heart of Christian baptism- conversion
to a life of faith and its demands of a different lifestyle with different
priorities.
In
the first days of the Church baptism involved adults taking a period of
preparation sometimes lasting up to three years. Those who asked to be baptized
were called catechumens which means under instruction. At the celebration of
the baptism the person was submerged in the water as a sign of being “buried
with Christ”. The newly baptized person then rose from the water as a sign of
the resurrection of Christ – which they, too now shared.
